he art of designing a perfect living or working space is an achievement many of us aspire to, especially in the digital age of constant comparison and aesthetical access. Pinterest has allowed any of us with an inkling of interest in decor to imagine the most elaborate, artistic interiors and DIY-design them with the click of a mouse. Yet, most of us feel disappointed when the bones of our spaces don’t look quite like the grand images we have pulled and pinned onto our aspirational vision boards. It has happened to the best of us: after hours of searching, it seems as though everything we have curated is either extending our budgets, or we don’t have a clue where the pieces have been sourced or how to even begin locating them.
The reality that is seldom spoken about, however, is that it takes years to build a nest that is a truly meaningful space. An eclectic interior is collected over decades, not ordered overnight. Acquiring art, furniture and one-of-a-kind pieces takes time. There is a journey in curating your home, and the process is one to be enjoyed–whether you live in a 600 square-foot apartment or a 3,000 square-foot house.
In the spirit of a new year and our new January issue, the life and legacy of Ada Lovelace inspired me to imagine that if she lived today she would inhabit a pristine, modern Victorian space. Enjoy the visual escapism of these spaces, and if you feel inspired to add a bit of Ada flair to your own home, take one element that inspires you and just begin growing from there. Whether painting a room, splurging on timeless designer wallpaper, looking for meaningful oddities as you travel, or spending the day antique hunting with a friend, the pieces in your home should tell just as many stories as the people who live in its spaces.
